  4. Designing For Hand Knitting

    Starting at: CA$250.00

Tuesday Evenings May 23th to August 8th or Wednesday Evenings May 24th to August 9th 7:00 - 9:00pm at 942 Erin Street We are so pleased to announce our first comprehensive design course. For 12 weeks we will lead you through the entire process of designing your own hand knit garment. The only requirement is that you have basic knitting and pattern reading skills. Whether you are an aspiring designer or you want to know how to alter and adjust your favourite patterns, we will take you on the exciting journey from the humble test swatch to your own finished creation. Week 1: Yarn Selection and Swatching Choosing the right yarn is all important when designing. Learn about the different weights and qualities and how they knit up and drape. Then it's on to the swatch. Swatches tell you everything you need to know about your project. We will show you how and why different stitches effect your gauge, how to measure for accuracy and how to apply the numbers to your design. Week 2: Designing and Writing a Pattern for a Small Accessory We will work through our first design on something small. Using what we know about the various types of yarn and working with our swatch, you can choose to design a hat, mittens, socks or some other small project. While we work on our design, we will talk about how to write out the instructions in a standard way. Week 3: Designing a Garment Part 1: Measuring and Calculating Before we begin, we will talk about measuring bodies and proportions. In this class we will take our measurements and plot out a basic pattern sloper, using our swatch information. Week 4: Designing a Garment Part 2: Elements of Style Ease of fit, sleeve type, neckline styles, pockets, button bands, shaping or no shaping, stitch textures, colour choices - all of these things and more have to be considered when we make our design. Find out which elements really mesh together and see your design take shape. We will go through various shaping techniques and begin to plot out the pattern on paper. Weeks 5 - 10: Construction During the next 6 classes, we will start working on our designs, going through the methods of construction and writing out the pattern as we go. As we knit, we will talk about the small details that will make your design a success - little things such as which increases or decreases will look best with your design choices and whether or not short rows should be added for extra shape and fit. Weeks 11 - 12: Finishing Putting it together is a critical stage of your design. Learn professional techniques for seaming, picking up along edges, grafting and steeking. Learn alternative methods for making decorative edges and trims that will really add finesse to your creation. Learn More
